Josef Saller (born December 25, 1945 in Bischofshofen ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and retired main school director. From 1989 to 1999 he was a member of the Salzburg State Parliament and from 1999 to 2017 a member of the Federal Council . In the first half of 2016, Saller was President of the Federal Council .

education and profession

Saller attended elementary school in Bischofshofen from 1951 to 1957 and then from 1957 to 1960 the local secondary school. He then moved to the Federal Teachers' Training College in Salzburg in 1960 and completed his training there in 1966. After completing military service between 1968 and 1969 (last lieutenant in the reserve), he worked as a primary school teacher in the Wagrain and Pöham primary schools from 1966 to 1970 and as a secondary school teacher in Bischofshofen at the Franz-Moßhammer secondary school and on from 1970 to 1985 the Hermann Wielandner secondary school. In 1985 he took over the position of principal school director at the Hermann Wielandner secondary school in Bischofshofen, where he remained in this position until his retirement in 2002.

Politics and functions

Saller was elected community party chairman of the ÖVP Bischofshofen in 1978 and was Vice Mayor of Bischofshofen from 1979 to 1989. Within the party he also worked from 1995 to 2005 as district party chairman of the ÖVP in Pongau. He was elected a member of the Salzburg State Parliament on September 13, 1989 and remained in this office until April 26, 1999. From April 27, 1999 to September 30, 2017, he represented the Austrian People's Party in the Federal Council. From October 7, 2004 to June 30, 2017, he was also secretary of the Federal Council with an interruption during his time as President of the Federal Council. He was succeeded in the Federal Council on October 1, 2017 by Andrea Eder-Gitschthaler .

Saller has been regional chairman of the Salzburg Seniors' Association since 2002. He cites senior policy, constitution and federalism as well as science and research as his political priorities.
