Josef Schmidt (born October 6, 1908 in Karlsruhe ; † July 28, 1979 in Emmendingen ) was a German politician (SPD) and from 1964 to 1972 a member of the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg and from 1957 to 1972 mayor of the Teningen community .

Schmidt worked as an insurance salesman before he was elected mayor of Teningen in 1957. In 1964 he was elected as the successor to Rudolf Schieler for the constituency of Emmendingen in the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg . As a member of the SPD parliamentary group during the grand coalition under Hans Filbinger , Schmidt was involved in the deliberations on the district reform law , which came into force on January 1, 1973. Schmidt played a major role in the fact that the Emmendingen district was not merged with neighboring districts during this reform, but was largely retained.

In connection with the municipal reform following the district reform, Josef Schmidt advocated a merger of the municipality of Teningen with the neighboring district town of Emmendingen. After a referendum in Teningen in 1972, in which the merger was rejected, Schmidt resigned from his office as mayor.

During his tenure as mayor, he significantly shaped Teningen's development from a farming village to a modern industrial community. In addition to the construction of a sewer system and the paving of roads, the construction of the Teninger school and sports center, which was completed in 1964, should be mentioned. A particular achievement of Schmidt is the construction of numerous social housing by the community as well as a significant expansion of the settlement area of the place, whereby the community has mainly promoted the construction of homes for families.
