Josef Tichatschek (also Joseph Aloys Tichatschek , Czech Josef Ticháček ; born  July 11, 1807 in Weckelsdorf , Austrian Empire , † January 18, 1886 in Dresden ) was a German opera singer of Czech descent ( tenor ).

Life

After attending the Stiftsgymnasium in Braunau , Josef Tichatschek began studying medicine in Vienna in 1827 , but soon devoted himself more to studying music. In 1830 he was accepted into the choir of the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna. At the same time he studied singing with the Italian tenor Giuseppe Ciccimarra (1790-1836). In 1833 he sang his own small parts . In 1834 he received an engagement as the first tenor in Graz . In 1837, after a very successful guest performance in Dresden, he found a job at the Dresden Opera and at the same time became a singer in the choir of the Catholic Court Church in Dresden. He worked with the singer Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient and since 1842 at the Dresden Opera as Kapellmeister make Richard Wagner artistically very successful together. In Richard Wagner's Rienzi , Tannhäuser and Lohengrin in particular, Tichatschek was celebrated as a singer by the audience and critics . He gave numerous guest appearances all over Europe. In 1870 he ended his singing career. He was a member of the Freemasons Association .

Joseph Tichatschek spent his twilight years in Dresden, where he died in 1886 and was buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery . The Tichatscheckstraße , which runs in the Dresden districts of Pieschen and Trachau , was named after him.
