Josef Vlay

Josef Vlay (born June 19, 1959 ) is a former German soccer player. In the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , he played 195 games for FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt , in which he scored 40 goals.

Athletic career

At the age of 14, Josef Vlay began his career as a soccer player in the youth team of FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt in 1973. In the 1977/78 season he played his first games in the East German league. He made his first appearance on April 1, 1978 in the encounter between Rot-Weiß Erfurt and FC Carl Zeiss Jena (2-1), after which he was called up in four other league games. He was in the starting line-up four times and played as a striker on the left lane. In the 1978/79 season, the 1.80 m tall sports teacher student appeared for the first time in the official Oberliga lineup of FC Rot-Weiß. In his eleven appearances, he was only three times in the team from the start, but scored his first league goal on matchday three against Sachsenring Zwickau . Even in his eleven league games in 1979/80, Vlay was only a substitute. As such, he also took part in the final of the GDR soccer cup on May 17, 1980. In the 1: 3 defeat after extra time against FC Carl Zeiss Jena, he was only substituted on in the 6th minute of extra time.

It was not until 1980/81 that he was able to play in the regular eleven, because he played 23 of the 26 point games in which he was mainly called up in midfield. He was only able to maintain his regular place in the following season, in which he again completed all point games in midfield and was also able to distinguish himself as a successful goalscorer with his seven goals. He was able to increase his number of hits in 1982/83 with eight hits, he was also used again in all 26 league games, but was only in 17 games 90 minutes on the field. In 1982 and 1983 he played two international games with the GDR Olympic team . Until 1986 Vlay played the majority of the 78 league league games, but he was only 44 times in the starting line-up. In the season 1984/85 he was with his eight goals behind Uwe Weidemann (12) the second best shooter in Erfurt. In 1986/87 he was only used 16 times in the league, but only ten times over the full playing time. He played these games as a striker and scored the only hat trick of his league career on matchday 13 against progress Bischofswerda . Vlay played his last league season at the age of 28 in 1987/88. Between the 12th and 18th matchday he was only called up five times as a substitute.

From the 1988/89 season on Josef Vlay played for Robotron Sömmerda in the second-rate GDR league . By the end of the GDR football game operations in 1989/90, he had made 58 stakes and scored nine goals. Then he was still active at the successor club FSV Sömmerda. After the end of his football career, Vlay worked as a physical education teacher.
