The West Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary is a 1,627  acres (6.6  square kilometers ) wide reserve in Plainfield in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .

Protected area

Located in the basin of the Westfield River, classified as a National Wild and Scenic River , the West Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary is part of one of the largest contiguous sanctuaries in Massachusetts. It provides a habitat for elk , American black bears , otters , fishing marten and bobcat, among others . The eponymous West Mountain is at 2,125  ft (647.7  m ) the highest point in the entire Hampshire County and allows trees such as the Engelmann spruce or the rocky mountain fir to thrive, which otherwise only occur much further north. 1.3  mi (2.1  km ) of hiking trails are available to visitors, with special programs being offered irregularly through the Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary .
