Josef Zauner (publisher)

Josef Zauner , pseudonym Josef Düa (born November 18, 1895 in Kisfalud , German  Engelsbrunn , Kingdom of Hungary , Austria-Hungary , † 1959 in Timișoara , People's Republic of Romania ) was a Romanian-German publisher , Esperantist and pioneer of European unification .

Zauner is considered to be the first person who made a decisive commitment to the introduction of a common European currency. His life and work were largely forgotten during the Second World War ; Only in connection with the introduction of the euro was his name mentioned again (e.g. on the basis of a postcard he published from around 1930).

While Zauner's early publications are now lost, the German Esperanto Library in Aalen has copies of Josef Zauner's brochures "The Road to the European Party" (Timișoara, 1931) and "Geneva or Europa-Centro" (Timișoara, 1936) . In both writings, Zauner advocates the establishment of the “ United States of Europe ” with a customs union, a common army and a common currency. In contrast to the Paneuropean Union program , Zauner's “United States of Europe” should also include the Soviet Union , and “the European language” (= Esperanto ) was supposed to unite Europeans as a common second language.

As early as 1934, Zauner emphasized that the introduction of a common European currency would only be possible after political union.

In his brochure “Geneva or Europe-Centro” from 1936, Zauner writes of the “new conditions” that are shaped by “intolerant regimes” and therefore require new initiatives with a view to European unification. He is therefore no longer planning to found a European party, but proposes to found a new European capital with a central European airport in Hitler's Germany not far from Regensburg , which should then develop into the center of Europe that is growing together.

From 1930 to 1937 Zauner published the magazine UŜE-EĤO , which promoted the creation of the "United States of Europe" among Esperanto speakers.

In 1939 and 1941, Zauner published two brochures under the pseudonym Josef Düa , which dealt with ideas in the field of technology .
