Josef von Hirsch , from 1869 Freiherr von Hirsch , (born July 2, 1805 in Würzburg , † December 9, 1885 in Planegg ) was a German-Jewish court banker and merchant in Planegg near Munich .

Life

Joseph Jacob von Hirsch was born as the second son of the Jewish banker and merchant Jakob von Hirsch on Gereuth . In 1840 he inherited his father's possessions in Planegg and Krailling and remained lord of the castle in Planegg until his death in 1885 .

Von Hirsch was married to Karoline Wertheimer (1808–1887) and had ten children:

In 1840 the Royal Württemberg government appointed him their consul in Munich. He was appointed court banker ("Hofbanquier") by the Bavarian king in 1841. When Justus von Liebig founded the artificial fertilizer factory Bayerische AG for chemical and agricultural-chemical products (BAG), later Süd-Chemie , in 1857 , Josef von Hirsch supported him financially . In 1867 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Albrecht by the King of Saxony . In 1869 Josef von Hirsch was raised to the baron status by King Ludwig II .
