The St. Josef branch church is 686 meters above sea level on Josefsberg, southeast of St. Paul in Lavanttal, and belongs to the monastery parish . A church built in 1590 in place of the already dilapidated Loschenthal Castle was badly damaged by lightning in 1782. It was restored in 1784/1785.

Building description

The church consists of a nave with a slightly retracted, round-closing choir, a southern sacristy extension and a western attached tower with arched twin windows and a pyramid roof. Three round-arched openings lead into the rectangular tower ground floor with a stitch cap vault. A three-bay barrel vault with stitch caps rises above the nave . The triaxial west gallery on pillars is vaulted under the groin. A round arched triumphal arch connects the nave with the groin - vaulted single - bay choir. The two-bay, groin-vaulted sacristy is located on the south side . Franz Xaver Heigel painted the vaults and the upper parts of the walls in 1784/85 and 1798 in a scenic and ornamental way.

Facility

The three altars were consecrated in 1720. The high altar bears the early baroque statues of the two Johannes, the sculptures of Saints Joachim and Hieronymus made by Michael Hönel in 1628 for the St. Paul Abbey, as well as the small figures of the princes of the apostles Peter and Paul . The altarpiece is the original altarpiece of the Holy Trinity . The antependium is adorned with relief carvings with carpenters tools of St. Joseph . The picture of the left side altar with the depiction of St. Vitus has a frame decorated with foliage and ribbon work . The right side altar with the altar painting of St. Rupert shows on the antependium a wooden relief with Mary's household utensils and a children's basket. The baroque pulpit , created in 1718, is crowned by the figure of the Good Shepherd on the sound cover . Michael Hönel originally created the life-size carved figure of St. Mary Magdalene with a crucifix in his hands for the St. Paul cross altar, which was ordered in 1629. The statue of Christ on the Scourge Column comes from the first half of the 18th century, the life-size carved crucifix from the 18th century. An oil painting of the Holy Trinity and an assembly of saints from around 1720 hangs on the western triumphal arch wall. The church also features two wooden busts of beardless Benedictines from the 17th century, a small figure of the Good Shepherd from the second quarter of the 18th century and pictures of the Stations of the Cross from the last quarter of the 18th century. The prayer stalls with foliage tendrils and inlays were made around 1720, the inlaid vestry cupboard in the third quarter of the 18th century.
