Josep Ribera i Miró (born January 4, 1839 in Alcover , † January 14, 1921 in Barcelona ) was a Catalan composer and organist .

life and work

Josep Ribera began his studies in Albi with the violinist Ll. Boixet. The family saw his abilities as an organist and entrusted him to the organist Magí Pontí in Lleida for training. In 1856 he was accepted for training at the Cathedral of Barcelona with the organists Josep Marraco and Mateu Ferrer .

From 1860 to 1864 he was organist of Sant Joan de Vilassar in Vilassar de Mar . In 1865 he went to Barcelona and became Kapellmeister of the parish of Santa Anna . He worked as a double bass player in the orchestras of the Teatre Principal and the Gran Teatre del Liceu . The latter orchestra was directed by his brother Cosme Ribera . He founded and directed the Societat Barcelona de Quartets and was President of the Societat de Concerts in Barcelona.

In Barcelona he soon showed his skills as a composer. He won several awards. In 1868 he wrote the work Madreselva for large orchestra. In 1878 he wrote his First Symphony based on Catalan folk-song motifs. In 1879 he composed the Simfonia Bètica , for which he received the prize of the Royal Academy of Santa Cecilia de Cádiz . In 1880 he published the work El mercat ("The Market") for solo voices. He also left sacred music like the Misa Santísimo Sacramento . He was particularly well known as the composer of 15 Catalan zarzuelas , including De Barcelona al Parnàs , Maria Antonieta , De dotze a una and Un pobre diable i Dos milions .
