Joseph A. Zilber

Joseph Abraham Zilber (born July 27, 1923 in Boston , † October 4, 2009 ) was an American mathematician who dealt with algebraic topology and category theory .

Joseph Abraham Zilber studied at Harvard University, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1943, his master's degree in 1946 and his doctorate in 1963 with the dissertation " Categories in Homotopy Theory " with Andrew Gleason . From 1948 to 1950 he was an instructor at Columbia University and from 1950 to 1955 at Johns Hopkins University . 1955/56 he was Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois , 1956/57 Lecturer at Northwestern University and 1957 to 1962 Research Associate at Brown University . Zilber taught from 1962, first as an assistant professor and later as a professor at Ohio State University . In 1992 he retired there.

His name is linked to Eilenberg-Zilber's theorem about the singular homology of product spaces.

From 1958 to 1962 he was co-editor of the Mathematical Reviews . He was a member of the Mathematical Association of America for more than 60 years . He was also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

He had been married since 1954 and had three sons.
