Joseph Altmann

Joseph (Ritter von) Altmann (born July 30, 1777 in Sternberg , Moravia ; † April 14, 1831 in Unterrain , South Tyrol ) was an officer in the service of the Habsburg Monarchy .

Joseph Altmann joined the Dragoon Regiment No. 4 as a soldier in 1794 and thus took part in the campaigns of 1794. He later became a corporal . In this position he appeared on November 6, 1799 as part of the so-called Vignolo affair , when he freed two captured soldiers. In doing so, he had shown such courage that he received the silver medal for bravery . Eventually he defeated the enemy infantry in the Battle of Marengo . He also freed a count and a general who had been captured. For this he was awarded the gold medal for bravery, but had to give up the silver one beforehand.

Altmann later became a sergeant , 1805 regimental sub- lieutenant . Four years later he was promoted to first lieutenant. On May 13, 1809, a battle took place near Söll . In all his work in the campaign, but especially in the battle near Söll, Altmann distinguished himself in such a way that he was awarded the Military Maria Theresa Order . 1813 Captain appointed he entered in 1820 into the retirement . This forced his battle-battered health. On April 14, 1831, he finally died at the age of 54 in Unterrain.
