Joseph Andreas Weiß ( Russian Иосиф Андреевич Вейс , born July 31, 1814 in Freising ; † April 20, 1887 in Munich ) was a German vedute painter who also worked in Russia.

Life

White was a student of his father, the amateur painter and director of the deaf-mute institute Joseph Anton Weiß (1787–1878) as well as Domenico and Simon Quaglio . Weiß came to St. Petersburg in 1839 as court painter to Duke Max Eugen von Leuchtenberg , where he created numerous vedutas and in Moscow. Some of his works were created on the order of Tsar Nicholas I and his daughter, Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna . The tsar had ordered two paintings from Weiss as a bride present for his daughter to remind her of her homeland. One showed Isaac's Church in St. Petersburg surrounded by 14 smaller portraits, with the main buildings and squares of the city. The other had a view of the venerable Kremlin in the center and also 14 smaller views of churches and other interesting buildings. After the early death of the Duke, Weiss returned to Munich in 1852.
