Josef Beeking

Josef Beeking (born September 6, 1891 in Recklinghausen ; † November 18, 1947 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Roman Catholic theologian, welfare and charity scholar .

Life

Josef Beeking was the third child of eight children of the master carpenter Julius Beeking and his wife Maria, geb. Ostermanns born. From 1913 to 1919 he studied philosophy and Catholic theology as well as political science at the universities of Münster and Freiburg i. Br. , Interrupted 1917/18 by military service. He was ordained a priest on April 5, 1919 in Münster Cathedral. From 1919 to 1921 he was a chaplain in Bork / Westphalia . In 1923 he graduated as Dr. theol. For several years from 1921 he was Secretary General and Head of the "Department for Youth Welfare" at the German Caritas Association . During this time he has published several papers on child welfare and the new youth welfare law . From 1921 he was a member of the specialist committee for Caritas science of the German Caritas Association , headed by Heinrich Weber . Weber and Beeking worked closely with each other and complemented each other in their publications. In 1926, Beeking completed his habilitation in Freiburg, and in 1931 he became an associate professor there. Even as a private lecturer, he was involved in the development and expansion of the "Institute for Caritas Science" at the University of Freiburg i.Br. essentially involved. In 1927, Beeking also took over the management of the new youth leader seminar of the German Caritas Association.

In 1935 his license to teach was revoked due to a denunciation. He had to flee to Austria and Switzerland. In 1935 he received a professorship in Salzburg and in 1940 in Solothurn . There he worked with other caring, pastoral theological and journalistic work. After the Second World War he returned to Freiburg i.Br. back and in 1947 became an adjunct professor there. He devoted his last lecture to the topic of "Meaning and responsibility of the sexes".
