Joseph Bernhard Winck (born July 29, 1754 in Hildesheim , † February 15, 1812 in Oldenburg ) was a German architect who worked on the expansion of Oldenburg into the classicist residence of the Duchy of Oldenburg on behalf of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig .

Life

His father was Joseph Gregor Winck (1710–1781) from Deggendorf , who had been a painter in Hildesheim since 1744 in the service of the Elector and Bishop of Hildesheim Clemens August von Bayern .

From 1788 to 1794 he lived and worked in Münster , employed by the cathedral chapter as a sub-master. He was also a student of Wilhelm Ferdinand Lipper here . However, his activity in Münster can only be proven by archival evidence. From 1789 he examined the structural condition of the Oldenburg Lamberti Church and in 1790 drafted proposals for its fundamental renovation. From 1791 he was the site manager responsible for the renovation. Winck previously worked as an architect for the redesign of Rastede Palace, also on behalf of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig. The round temple there in the palace gardens of Rastede is attributed to him.

In 1794 Winck was permanently employed as a building inspector in Oldenburg and moved with his family from Münster to Oldenburg. While the Lambertikirche was still being rebuilt, Winck received the additional order in Oldenburg to design two plazas that would take the place of the medieval city gates and were to be connected by a wide avenue. However, only the semicircular square in front of the Haarentor was built , at the apex of which the first Catholic parish church in Oldenburg and other houses were built in 1805 under Winck's direction . In addition to the Catholic parish church in Emden, built between 1803 and 1806, and the Martinskirche in Ovelgönne , built in 1809 , this was Winck's third new church. Winck also built houses for private individuals, for example on Huntestrasse in Oldenburg. Through his construction work, Winck was one of the master builders who had a decisive influence on the classicist image of the city of Oldenburg.
