Joseph "Joe" Brooks (born March 11, 1938 in New York City ; † May 22, 2011 ibid) was an American screenwriter , director , film producer and composer .

Life

At the beginning of his career he was a successful composer for advertising jingles .

Brooks became famous for the song You Light Up My Life , which he wrote for the film of the same name and which was subsequently used in numerous other films and television series.

The version sung by Debby Boone reached number one in the US charts for ten consecutive weeks from October 1977 - this value was only exceeded in 1992 by Boyz II Mens End of the Road . The single sold over four million copies in the United States alone, more than any other song in the 1970s. As the author of the song, Brooks was awarded a Grammy , an Oscar and a Golden Globe , among others .

In June 2009, Brooks was charged with sexual abuse . Under the pretext that they could introduce themselves for a film role, he lured four women into his apartment between March and May 2008, got them drunk with alcohol and finally forced them to engage in sexual acts. The charges included rape, sexual abuse, criminal sexual acts, harassment and other offenses. Brooks was found guilty of 91 counts on June 23, 2009.

On May 22, 2011, he was found dead in his New York apartment. According to the police, it was most likely a suicide .

Joseph Brooks had two children from his divorced marriage. His brother Gilbert Kaplan , an American entrepreneur and business journalist , became known worldwide as an amateur conductor for his interpretation of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2 .
