Josef Chavanne , in some publications also Joseph Chavanne (born August 7, 1846 in Graz , † December 7, 1902 in Buenos Aires ) was an Austrian geographer , meteorologist and world traveler. His French family name can be explained by his Walloon ancestors.

Life

Chavanne, who had studied in Graz and Prague , undertook an extensive trip to Central and North America ( Mexico , West Indies , Texas ) from 1867-69 , after which he visited various Moroccan port cities and penetrated from Oran into the Algerian Sahara . From 1869–70 he worked at the Meteorological Reichsanstalt Vienna, in 1875 he finally took over the editing of the communications of the Vienna Geographical Society .

According to him, this is Cape Chavanne named in Antarctica.
