Joseph Christian Leyendecker
Joseph Christian "JC" Leyendecker (born March 23, 1874 in Montabaur , Germany , † July 25, 1951 in New Rochelle , New York ) was an American draftsman and illustrator .
Life
Leyendecker emigrated to the United States with his parents and brother Frank in 1882 at the age of eight . He showed an early interest in painting and was already working as a painter and engraver at J. Manz & Co in Chicago at the age of sixteen . and took classes in the evenings with John H. Vanderpoel at the Chicago Art Institute . Then he decided to go to Paris with his brother Frank for two years in 1896 to study at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi .
Before he left for Europe, Leyendecker won a competition for covers advertised by Century Magazine in front of Maxfield Parrish , which also ensured his national fame. Upon his return in 1898, Leyendecker began painting the covers of the Saturday Evening Post . He created the so-called "Saturday Evening Post babies" and the "Arrow collar man" and subsequently worked for the American Weekly , Collier’s , Popular Magazine and Century Illustrated, among others .
