Joseph Edmund Woerl

Joseph Edmund Woerl (born March 27, 1803 in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm , † April 1, 1865 in Konstanz ) was a German cartographer and geographer .

Joseph Edmund Woerl was the son of the surgeon and surgeon Leopold Woerl (1771–1825). He attended high school in Munich where he became familiar with cartographic work. From 1825 he worked as an engineer-geographer at the topographical provincial institute in Besançon , from 1827 at the literary-artistic institute of the JG Cotta'schen Buchhandlung for lithographic reproduction and copper printing in Munich . In 1828 he went to Freiburg , where he took over the cartographic department of the Herder'schen publishing bookstore . From 1834 he taught at the University of Freiburg as a private lecturer in "History, Geography and Statistics of the European States", and on January 15, 1840, he received the title of adjunct professor. On March 20, 1840, he married Maria Herder (* 1805), the daughter of his employer Bartholomä Herder (1774–1839). After Herder had stopped his cartographic activities for financial reasons, he went to Constance in 1847, where he taught history, geography, German and French at the Lyceum until his death.

His son was the publisher and bookseller Leo Woerl (1843–1918).
