Joseph Leader

Joseph Führer (born January 20, 1858 in Munich , † February 8, 1903 in Bamberg ) was a German Christian archaeologist , high school teacher and professor at the Lyceum in Bamberg .

From 1877 on, Führer studied classical philology at the University of Munich . In 1882 he passed the high school teacher examination. From 1883 he was a teacher at the Freising grammar school . In 1889 he received his doctorate in Erlangen . From 1890 he taught at the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich . 1891–92 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . During this time he came to Sicily for the first time , where he began to research the early Christian catacombs of the island, including in Syracuse , which would become his life's work. He found support from the archaeologist Paolo Orsi . In 1894 he moved to the Ludwigsgymnasium in Munich . 1894–95 he was back in Sicily with a Bavarian state scholarship. From 1897 he taught as a professor of history and philology at the Royal Lyceum in Dillingen and from 1898 at the Royal Lyceum in Bamberg. In 1899 he was awarded the Order of the Crown of Italy in recognition of his research in Sicily . 1899–1900 he was able to continue his work in Sicily with financial support from the DAI. To this day, Führer’s research forms the basis of scientific research into the Catacombs of Sicily. His long work in the underground rooms damaged his health and died early. Victor Schultze published the results of his research posthumously in 1907.
