Joseph Gottfried Mikan

Joseph Gottfried Mikan , often also Josef Bohumír Mikan (born December 4, 1742 in Bohemian Leippa , † August 7, 1814 in Prague ), was a Bohemian botanist , doctor and university professor .

Life

Mikan received his first education in Dresden and Prague. He then studied medicine at the University of Vienna . There he discovered his passion for chemistry and botany under Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin . After becoming a Dr. med. After receiving his doctorate , he was given the position of spa doctor in Teplitz . In 1773 he went to Prague. There he was appointed extraordinary lecturer for chemistry and botany in 1774, and in 1775 he was given the newly created full professorship for chemistry and botany with recognition from Maria Theresa .

In 1775 Mikan was commissioned to create a botanical garden in Prague and in 1779 a laboratory chymicum. He did his best to optimize medical training for doctors, pharmacists and midwives in Prague and initiated the creation of several new chairs. In addition, he was dean of the medical faculty several times , rector of the university in 1779 and he also held the office of vice chancellor . In 1811 he gave up the management of the botanical garden.

Mikan went 1812 in the retirement . His successor was his son Johann Christian Mikan . One of the offspring he took on was Anton Johann Jungmann, Professor of Medicine.
