Heller is Emeritus Associate Professor in the Department of Evolutionary Ecology and Behavioral Studies at the Silverman Institute for Life Sciences at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .

Career

Heller immigrated to Israel in 1949 . He received in 1965 his Bachelor in biological sciences, zoology and microbiology , the Master in Zoology in 1968 and PhD in 1972 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His dissertation is entitled Studies on the systematics distribution and ecology of the landsnail Buliminus in Israel . Heller was visiting scholar at the Universities of Liverpool , Bristol , Cape Town and the State University of New York at Stony Brook . In 1986 he was appointed professor in Jerusalem. He has published four books and over 100 articles. He wrote the first books on land and sea snails in Israel.

Research areas

Heller's core studies deal with the taxonomy , biogeography, and reproductive biology of snails in Israel and in general. He also made contributions to the natural history of current and fossil land and water snails , such as resistance to heat and dehydration . Heller's research results led to the development of a new biogeographical method for modeling the response of the animal world to climatic gradients. From this he derived planning strategies with priority setting for the conservation of terrestrial invertebrates .

Scientific activities

In 1979, Heller was appointed Scientific Curator of the National Mollusc Collection of the National Natural History Collections of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He holds this position to this day. He participates in the Committee on Hebrew Terms in Zoology and Biology at the Academy of Hebrew Language . Heller is also a member of the Fauna Committee of the Israel Academy of Sciences. Heller was editor-in-chief of the Israel Journal of Zoology from 1989 to 1990 . During his career at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Heller was elected Head of the Department of Zoology. For his actual research, his decades of activity in science in general and for the design of scientific education in Israel, Heller was awarded honorary membership of the Israel Zoological Society in 2010.
