Joseph Mokoena

Joseph Albert Mashite Mokoena (born November 25, 1919 in Johannesburg , † February 1969 in Zambia ) was a South African mathematician and politician who was a member of the African National Congress (ANC).

Life

Mokoena acquired his Matric in 1938 at St. Peter's Secondary School in Johannesburg. In 1941, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and physics at the University of Fort Hare , then he earned a Bachelor of Science hons . Between 1944 and 1948 he studied at the University of South Africa and graduated with a Master of Science . At the University of the Witwatersrand , he received a Bachelor of Arts hons and in 1959 a doctorate in mathematics.

As a student in Johannesburg, he was a member of the first executive committee of the ANC Youth League, founded in 1944 . In 1949 he was elected to the National Executive Committee of the ANC.

1945 to 1957 he was a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Fort Hare. He then taught at the Kumasi College of Technology ; During this time he was also awarded his doctorate. In 1960 he moved to Zaria in Nigeria to the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology . In 1963 he worked for a short time at Aston College of Technology in Birmingham , UK . He then moved to the University of Rhodesia in what was then Salisbury as a UNESCO lecturer in mathematics . After the Smith government declared independence , he was also employed as a UNESCO lecturer at the School of Natural Sciences at the University of Zambia in Lusaka , where he died in a traffic accident in 1969.

Mokoena was not married and had no children.

Honors

Mokoena was posthumously awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in gold in 2004.
