Joseph Nicolaus Torner
Joseph Nicolaus Andreas Torner , also Tourner, Tornerr, Dorner or Tournell (* around 1700 probably in Luxembourg ; † May 8, 1762 in Trier ), was a German organist and composer of the 18th century. From the year 1724 his activity as a cathedral organist at the Trier cathedral is proven.
Life
Joseph Nicolaus Torner was born around 1700 "in Luxembourgish". Nothing is known about his family of origin, his exact place of birth and his education.
On the occasion of the baptism of a son, Torner was first mentioned in 1724 as organist at Trier Cathedral in a church book entry, where he was referred to as "expertissimus D. (ominus) Joseph Torner organista summi templi". Torner seems to have settled permanently in Trier, the exact time of his arrival and his appointment as cathedral organist is unclear. According to the Trier Court, State and State Calendar of 1760, Torner was not only active as an organist at the High Cathedral, but also at the Trier Church of Our Lady and in St. Gangolf . He held these offices until his death. Joseph Nicolaus Torner died on May 8, 1762 at the age of about 62 in Trier.

In addition to his profession as a church musician, Torner was active as a composer of chamber music and also wrote pieces for individual instruments. He published several works, but only his fourth opus with the title ABC per tertiam minorem , which was printed around 1735 by the Augsburg music publisher Johann Christian Leopold , was preserved. This is a compilation of pieces with a minor third (minor) . It contains eight cycles with organ masses , each consisting of the three movements Offertorium , Elevatio and Communio and composed by Torner in the keys of A, B, C, D, E, F and G minor. He also wrote a concerto in A major and several catchy, melodic pieces in major keys "per tertiam majorem" with titles such as Toccata ex C , Arietta , Glockenspiel , Gavotte , Aria cantabile , Corrente , Marche and Menuet en Rondeau . In Ettal a rare originated in 1747 anthology of works of Baroque music in which Torners ABC by a minor third , together with works by Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer (1662-1742) and Felix Gass is (1715-1752).
The musicologist Felix Friedrich writes about Torner's work: "Torner's compositions are remarkable examples of an early, sensitive and gallant style of the 18th century in spite of their simple style."
