Joseph Plaut
Joseph Plaut (born June 5, 1879 in Detmold ; † November 25, 1966 in Bad Salzuflen ) was a German actor , reciter and local poet from Lippe .
Life
Joseph Plaut was born the son of a Jewish teacher and school inspector . After completing his commercial training, he worked as a clerk and then served as a one-year volunteer in the Prussian army . Here he was already using his speaking skills as a troop entertainer with his sketches . He then studied singing at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin. Engelbert Humperdinck and Hans Pfitzner were among his teachers . From 1902 he made a career as an opera singer, especially as a buffo , first in smaller cities, then until 1914 in Berlin at the German Opera House and at the Hebbel Theater .
Plaut took part in the First World War as a soldier . He then appeared as an actor and performing artist together with his wife Maria Schneider with cabaret programs , the Heiteren Plaut-Evenings , and published numerous recordings. He could also be heard on the radio. Frequently, themes from his military days found their way into his skits. Military memories of a Westphalian , instruction hour and funeral speech by a Prussian lieutenant became famous. In addition to these self-invented and continuously developed texts, he recited prose and poetry , among others by Theodor Fontane , Hans Christian Andersen and Anton Chekhov in an idiosyncratic, captivating manner.
He mastered numerous dialects that he used to create his comedy (including Saxon, East Prussian and Lippian). During the time of National Socialism he was disturbed by SA people in the Detmold State Theater with rabble-rousing and stink bombs when he was performing the historically handed down soldier 's song Lippe-Detmold, a beautiful city that is actually an anti-war song . Paradoxically, this song nevertheless advanced to become the Lippische and Detmold anthem on the one hand, and the military marching song on the other, and is still sung in the Bundeswehr today. In 1936 he had to emigrate to South Africa via Switzerland and from there to England in 1937 . First interned on the Isle of Man , he was later able to work for the BBC .
After the war, Joseph Plaut returned to Germany in 1951, where he again worked as a reciter and actor for theater and radio. In 1960/61 he told fairy tales and stories for children in a series on German television. Shortly before his death he recited at the invitation of the then Head Boy of the Detmold Christian Dietrich Grabbe Gymnasium , Edgar Selge , before enthusiastic students.
