Joseph Rothe

Joseph Rothe (* 1759 in Böhmisch Kamnitz ; † March 18, 1808 in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera singer (bass) and actor .

Life

Rothe worked at the Viennese court theaters from 1785 to 1787 and leased the theater in Brno from 1792 to 1803 . He then moved to the Theater an der Wien . There he played the jailer Rocco at the premiere of Beethoven's opera Fidelio on November 20, 1805, as well as at the two performances of the second version of the opera on March 29 and April 10, 1806.

He last lived "at Vienna No. 7", where he died on March 18, 1808 at the age of only 49 years.

Rothe was married to the singer Clara Rothe (1763-1826), who belonged to the court theater ensemble from 1785 to 1793, then worked in Brno and at the Theater an der Wien.
