Joseph Schalom Elyashiv (born April 10, 1910 in Schaulen , Russian Empire , † July 18, 2012 in Jerusalem ; Hebrew יוסף שלום אלישיב) was an Israeli Chedi rabbi and Posek . Elyashiv was active until his death as a lawyer and was among the first-tier leaders of Israel and of the Diaspora living lithuanian -charedischen community. Many Ashkenazi Jews viewed him as Posek Ha-dor , the leading authority on questions related to halacha , Jewish law. He lived in Jerusalem.

Life

Joseph Schalom Elyashiv was a grandson of the kabbalistic rabbi Schlomo Eljaschiw (des Leschem , 1841-1926) from Schaulen. His father was Abraham Elyashiv from Homel (now Belarus), his mother's name was Chaya Moussa Elyashiv. He was an only child; his parents had him after 17 years of marriage. His father's original surname was Erener , but Erener took his father-in-law's name to obtain a certificate that would allow the family entry into the British Mandate of Palestine . The Elyashivs went to Palestine in 1922 when Joseph was twelve years old.

Rabbi Abraham Isaak Kook , Chief Rabbi of Israel, suggested Sheina Chaya (d. 1994), daughter of Rabbi Aryeh Levin , as Elyashiv's spouse. The couple had five sons and seven daughters; six of her daughters married important rabbinical figures - for example, his eldest daughter is married to the well-known Israeli rabbi Chaim Kanievsky . A son died of typhus as a child, and a daughter was killed by Jordanian shelling in 1948. At the time of his death, Elyashiv had an estimated 1,000 descendants.

Spiritual and political leader

Elyashiv was the spiritual leader of the ultra-Orthodox Degel-haTora party, which is also represented in the Knesset . He had a great influence on the politics of the party, which is part of the United Torah-Judaism Alliance . Degel HaTorah strictly followed all of his decisions and instructions. In 1989, when the party was formed, Rabbi Elasar Menachem Schach Elyashiv successfully asked Elyashiv to participate in its political leadership. He attended the large public meetings and participated in decisions. Most of the Rosh yeshiva belonging to the Agudath Israel of America movement sought his opinion and followed his advice and guidelines. Despite his scholarship and influence, he did not hold an official title as leader of a church, a yeshiva, or any other particular community.

He spent most of his time studying the Talmud and lecturing on it and the Shulchan Aruch at a synagogue in Jerusalem's Me'a She'arim district , where he also lived.

Elyashiv repeatedly called on his ultra-Orthodox supporters to boycott all state programs, be it secular education, national or military service.

Works

Elyashiv's halachic decisions and insights have been recorded in several books. The multi-volume Kovetz Teschuvos includes responsa that have emerged from incurred over many years questions. His ethical and preaching-related commentaries on the Torah , most of them from the 1950s, have been collected and published as Divrei Aggada .
