biography
Schocken came from a family that ran a chain of department stores from Zwickau . After completing his commercial training, he moved to Bremerhaven with his wife Jeanette Schocken in 1903 . With Jakob Spiro, who left the company in 1913, he opened the Schocken department store there on Bürgermeister-Smidt-Straße . In 1929 Schocken also acquired the S. Hirsch department store in Geestemünde , Georgstraße 51. Although his company was not legally part of his brothers' Schocken department store group , it was closely related to it in terms of organization (e.g. in purchasing goods and in the advanced methods of personnel training) , he was also a member of the Group's supervisory board .
As an active member of the Lehe-Geestemünde synagogue community, Schocken was elected synagogue head in 1928; he held this office until his death. From 1928 he lived in Lehe , W Wurster Straße 106 ( Villa Schocken ). Jeanette Schocken continued the company after his death until 1938.
