Jeanette Schocken (born Pinthus; born July 9, 1883 in Halle (Saale) , † probably 1942 in Minsk ) was a German department store owner of the Jewish faith and a philanthropist .

biography

Jeanette Pinthus grew up in Halle in a wealthy merchant family. Her father Max Isidor Pinthus owned a thriving textile department store here. In 1903 Jeanette Schocken came to Bremerhaven with her husband Julius Schocken (1872–1934) , who became a respected department store owner and synagogue director. With him she had the daughters Edith (* 1907) and Hilde (* 1918) and the son Heinz (* 1910). After Julius Schocken's death in 1934, she and her daughter Edith's husband, Walter Elkeles, managed their two department stores in Bremerhaven and Geestemünde , which were legally independent from the group , until they had to sell them in 1938 to the "Aryanized" headquarters of the successor group to the Schocken department store company . Like her husband Julius Schocken, she was active in the Jewish community and in Bremerhaven's charities.

After the November pogroms in 1938 , Jeanette Schocken's children Heinz and Hilde emigrated to the USA , her son-in-law Erkeles and her grandchildren to Palestine . Jeanette Schocken stayed with her daughter Edith, who was mentally ill because of the Nazi terror , in her house in Lehe (today Bremerhaven). On November 17, 1941, they were deported to Minsk along with other Jews from Bremen and Bremerhaven , where they were allegedly murdered in the Maly Trostinez extermination camp .
