Joseph Watter (born October 18, 1838 in Regensburg , † August 18, 1913 in Munich ) was a German genre painter and illustrator.

Joseph Watter was the son of a porcelain painter. He attended the Munich arts and crafts school, from June 6, 1856 he studied painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Philipp von Foltz and Arthur von Ramberg .

He devoted himself to genre painting and pictures from the world of fairy tales. In the 1860s he worked for the Fliegende Blätter , also illustrating books. In the period from 1870 to 1887 he showed his works in the gazebo .

On behalf of King Ludwig II , he created some works for the palaces in Herrenchiemsee and Linderhof .

Joseph Watter also designed "historical porcelain" for the royal court, as well as stage sets and costumes.
