Joseph von Hauer

Joseph von Hauer (born March 6, 1778 in Vienna ; † February 2, 1863 ibid) was an Austrian tax officer, statesman and paleontologist.

Joseph von Hauer, son of the court war councilor Karl Josef von Hauer, studied law at the University of Vienna until 1798 . In 1800 he became district commissioner in Korneuburg . From 1807 he worked for the kk Hofkammer in Vienna, from 1831 until his retirement in 1848 as its vice chairman.

In addition, he carried out various diplomatic tasks. 1805 was in the army commissariat with the Russian troops, after the battle of Austerlitz with the French troops. In 1807 he carried out an economic tour of the Alpine countries. In 1809 he was involved in the relocation of archives and art, including the kk Naturalienkabinett, from the French from Vienna to Hungary, which he was able to bring back to Vienna in 1810. In 1810 he traveled to France with Karl Chotek von Chotkow in order to assess the economic and political conditions there for the Imperial and Royal Government. In 1811 he became a member of the Commission for the Elimination of the Bank Note Industry and in 1816 he was involved in regulating the coinage . He also published papers on topics related to finance and administration.

In addition to his job, von Hauer was interested in natural science and especially paleontology. For example, he researched the tertiary layers of the Vienna Basin . Foraminifera fossil material that he discovered and collected was used by Alcide d'Orbigny in 1846 for his monograph on the foraminifera of the Vienna basin. In 1846 Hauer became a member of the Society of Friends of Natural Sciences. In 1847 he was accepted into the Geology and Paleontology Section of the Leopoldina Academy .

Von Hauer rests in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof in Vienna. His collection is now in the Montanist Museum of the Federal Geological Institute in Vienna.

His son Franz von Hauer was also active as a geologist and paleontologist, his son Karl von Hauer was an Imperial and Royal captain and chemist and as such head of the laboratory of the Imperial Geological Institute .
