Joseph of Pestalozza
Count Joseph Otto Wilhelm von Pestalozza (born June 17, 1868 in Augsburg , † August 26, 1930 in Erlangen ) was a German lawyer and Bavarian politician .
Life
Joseph von Pestalozza came from a long-established Bavarian noble family of Italian origin . He was the son of Otto Graf von Pestalozza (1825–1900) and his wife Minna duration (1828–1891), daughter of the Bavarian judge Franz duration. The family lived on Gut Siebenbrunn near Augsburg.
Pestalozza studied law in Munich, became a public prosecutor at the local police department and then worked as a district assessor for Scheinfeld in forensic practice . In 1900 the noblewoman Elsa Martin (1880–1947), daughter of the Justice Council Eugen Martin, married in Nuremberg and settled here as a lawyer.
From 1907 to 1918 Count Pestalozza was a member of the Center in the Chamber of Deputies of the Kingdom of Bavaria , from 1919 to 1928 he represented the Bavarian People's Party (BVP) in the state parliament in the same capacity . In 1910 he appeared as a speaker at the German Catholic Congress in Augsburg, and in 1911 he was the first representative of the center to enter the Nuremberg city council. 1920–28 Pestalozza also worked as an honorary member of the Bavarian State Court , the state constitutional court of the Free State.
Joseph von Pestalozza held the office of royal Bavarian chamberlain , as well as papal chamberlain "di spada e cappa" . In 1923 the count received the honorary title of Privy Councilor of Justice ; he was one of the early opponents of National Socialism in Bavaria and in 1923 was a supporter of the so-called 1st Enabling Act in favor of the Reich government . As a committed Catholic, the aristocrat consistently represented the church positions. The parliamentary database of the House of Bavarian History calls Joseph von Pestalozza "one of the most famous leaders of the Catholic movement in Nuremberg and Bavaria" .
As the state parliament reporter for the committee of inquiry into the 1923 Hitler coup , he presented the mendacity of Nazi propaganda with great courage and legal clarity in 1924 and publicly criticized the half-hearted conduct of the Hitler trial . This drew him the lasting hatred of the future rulers, whose polemical attacks clouded his last years of life.
