Joseph's Chapel (Düsseldorf)
The baroque Joseph Chapel in Düsseldorf's old town on today's Emilie-Schneider-Platz was designed as the monastery chapel of the Düsseldorf Carmelite Sisters and has the layout of a Greek cross .
Building
The chapel was designed by the electoral building director Matteo Alberti . The foundation stone was laid in 1712 and it was completed in 1716. The ceilings were painted by Tiepolo's students. Maria Anna Amalia Auguste von Pfalz-Sulzbach (1693–1762), a Wittelsbach princess from the Pfalz-Sulzbach family branch , officiated here from 1726 until the end of the 1730s as prioress of a convent of Carmelites .
In 1943 the chapel was destroyed and collapsed as a result of the Second World War . The building was rebuilt in the 1950s and largely returned to its original state in the 1970s. From 1989 to 1996 the interior of the chapel was restored. In 1994 and 1995 the Innsbruck painter Wolfram Köberl created the frescoes according to his own designs in the Neo-Rococo style.
Furnishing
The chapel serves as the burial place of the Catholic nun and mystic Émilie Schneider .
An organ by the organ builder Samuel Green has been in the chapel since 2013 . The late baroque instrument was built in 1795 for St. Mary's Church (Chatham, GB), which was profaned in 1974. Since then the organ has been dismantled and stored and has now been put back into use in Düsseldorf. It is remarkable, on the one hand, that the case is made of mahogany, and on the other hand, the range of the two manuals (GG, AA - e 3 ). The instrument has no pedals.
location
The Joseph Chapel stands on the corner of the Schlossufer and Altestadt with a view of the Rhine, in front of it is Emilie-Schneider-Platz , which is named after Émilie Schneider .
