Joshua Angrist

Joshua David Angrist (* 1960 in Columbus , Ohio ) is an American economist and university professor .

Career, research and teaching

Angrist first studied economics at Oberlin College , which he left in 1982 as a Bachelor of Arts . He then studied at Princeton University , where he graduated as a Master of Arts in May 1987 and finally as a Ph.D. in October 1989. completed.

Angrist initially taught as an assistant professor at Harvard University before moving to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as a senior lecturer in 1991 . There he rose to Associate Professor in 1995 . The following year he returned to the United States and worked in the same position in the economics faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he had already taught and researched as a visiting professor in 1994/95. In 1998 he was appointed full professor here. In 2008 he took over the Ford chair at the university.

The focus of Angrist's work is on labor economics and the examination of econometric methods . He is considered to be one of the most important representatives of the use of instrument variables in economic analysis. On this basis, he published studies and articles on, among other things, human capital and income distribution in the USA, educational opportunities and poverty. With his work he contributed to the establishment of the statistical method of regression discontinuity analysis, which had been used in psychology since the 1960s, in economics.

Angrist is a member of the Econometric Society and has been a Research Associate for the National Bureau of Economic Research since 1994 . In 2007 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of St. Gallen and in 2009 the John von Neumann Prize from the Budapest Rajk László Szakkollégium . He is co-founder of the MIT-based School Effectiveness & Inequality Initiative . Since the beginning of the 2000s he has been working and publishing intensively with the Bonn- based Institute for the Future of Work , where he became a Research Fellow in 2000 . He was also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2006.
