Josiah Duane Hicks (born August 1, 1844 in Make , Wales , †  May 9, 1923 in Altoona , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1899 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1847 Josiah Hicks and his parents came to Pennsylvania from his Welsh homeland, where the family settled in Duncansville . He attended public schools in Blair and Huntingdon Counties . From 1861 he lived in Altoona. In the years 1862 and 1863 he served almost 18 months as a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War . He was then employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad until 1873 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1875, he began to work in this profession in Tyrone . Between 1880 and 1886 he was a district attorney in Blair County. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the 1892 congressional elections , Hicks was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Edward Scull on March 4, 1893 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1899 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . Since 1897, Hicks was chairman of the patent committee. In 1898 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Josiah Hicks practiced as a lawyer again. Between 1911 and 1919 he was a member of the Altoona City Education Committee. In 1921 he was appointed State Commander in charge of the veterans organization Grand Army of the Republic in Pennsylvania. He died on May 9, 1923 in Altoona, where he was also buried.
