Juan Antonio Escalante
Juan Antonio de Frías y Escalante or Juan Antonio Escalante (* 1633 in Córdoba (Spain) , † 1669 in Madrid ), was a Spanish baroque painter.
After an initial apprenticeship in his hometown, he went to Madrid early on, where he became a student of Francisco Rizi , with whom he remained so closely connected that he made him his executor on his untimely death. Despite his youth, Escalante worked for the Spanish royal court and for various churches. There is also evidence of a collaboration with Rizi in the Cathedral of Toledo . Palomino praised his skill as a draftsman and mentioned Escalante's admiration for Venetian art, especially for Tintoretto and Veronese ; his art also shows influences from the Spanish painter Alonso Cano .
Escalante is best known as a painter of religious subjects, but he also created mythological images. The subject of general admiration was his 17-part cycle of the Eucharist , which he originally painted 1667–1668 for the sacristy of the Convent de la Merced Calzada in Madrid (today in the Prado , Madrid). One of his masterpieces is also his Dead Christ (1663), which was originally created for the convent of the Clérigos Menores (now also in the Prado) and shows a clear influence of Titian - he was also greatly admired by Palomino. In terms of style, Escalante's work, with its fragrant brushwork and finely graded coloring, partly already anticipates the late Baroque and Rococo .
