Juan José de Amézaga Landaraso (born January 28, 1881 in Montevideo , † August 21, 1956 ibid) was a Uruguayan lawyer and from March 1, 1943 to February 28, 1947 President of Uruguay. The restoration of civil rights during his reign marked the beginning of a new era for Uruguay from which all areas of society benefited.

Before Amézaga became president, he was ambassador and plenipotentiary for his country to the League of Nations . As a candidate for the Partido Colorado , Amézaga emerged victorious from the elections on November 29, 1942 . At the same time, the constitution was changed by a referendum ; thus democratic elements that had been abolished by the coup d'état of 1933 were reinstated. The Amézaga government (with Foreign Minister Rodríguez Larreta ) led Uruguay further towards democracy, which was also evident in the policy towards the world war powers. Uruguay declared its neutrality in 1939 , but broke off relations with the Axis powers in 1942 and henceforth supported the Allies . In February 1945 this culminated in a declaration of war against the German Reich and Japan . As in the First World War , Uruguay did not send any fighting troops.

The Amézaga government reformed the social legislation; In 1943 she set up the “Consejo de Salarios” , a “wages council” for negotiating and setting wages, made up of representatives from the state, employers and employees, and introduced a program to promote families. At the same time, agricultural workers were integrated into the pension system.

In 1945 the Uruguayan parliament passed a law that guaranteed paid vacation days for all workers. In 1946 a law improved the situation of farm workers, the poorest section of the population in the country; moreover, women were given the same rights as men that year .
