Juhan Saar

Juhan Saar (born December 22, 1929 in Laeva , † August 28, 2007 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian writer and children's book author.

life and work

Juhan Saar went to school in Laeva until 1945 and then trained as an electrician at the Tartu technical center, which he completed in 1949. He then worked briefly in the Tartu switchboard before he had to do his military service. From 1953 he worked in various magazines and publishing houses, but for the longest time in radio and television: from 1956 to 1970 he was editor for children's programs at Eesti Raadio , from 1972 to 1976 in the editorial office for literature at Eesti Televisioon . From 1981 he held positions at the Estonian Writers' Union, of which he had been a member since 1966. In 1990 he was one of the co-founders of the Faatum publishing house.

Juhan Saar's poetry has been judged cautiously and characterized as melancholy. On the other hand, his play “Valge tee kutse” about the life of the chansonnier Raimond Valgre , which was staged in Tallinn in 1985 , had great success . As a children's book author, he gained popularity primarily through his lyrics, which he wrote for the stage and television. His children's books have been translated into several languages, two of them also into German (see below).

He was married to the children's author Olivia Saar .
