Juju (singer)

Juju ( Japanese ジュジュ , proper spelling : JUJU ; born February 14, 1976 in Kyoto Prefecture ) is a Japanese R&B singer with a jazz background . After gaining her first musical experience in 2000, she made her debut in the Japanese music business in 2004.

life and career

Born and raised in Kyoto Prefecture, Juju wanted to become a jazz singer and prepared for it through many different musical activities. She left Japan at the age of 18 and moved to New York City in the United States . There she performed in jazz clubs and developed her own style, which has influences from jazz, R&B , hip-hop , soul , Latin music and house . Around 2001 there were first collaborations between Juju and various musicians. A year later she created the theme music for the film Kyōki no Sakura .

In 2004 she signed her first recording contract with Sony Music Associated Records Inc. and made her debut with her first single, Hikaru no Naka e ( 光の中へ ), which was unsuccessful. In the same year, in addition to her activities in the United States, she performed in Japan. Their third single, Kiseki o Nozomu nara… ( 奇跡を望むなら… ), reached the top of the USEN charts and stayed there for 22 weeks, which was a record for these charts. However, since it was only supported by smaller groups of listeners, it was still quite unknown at the time.

On August 13, 2008, she released a collaboration single with the Japanese group Spontania , which was called Kimi no Subete ni ( 君のすべてに ). With this she landed at number 7 on the Oricon charts and also became better known in the Japanese music industry. The song also sold more than 2.5 million digital copies in Japan. On November 26th, 2008 she released another single with Spontania: Sunao ni Naretara ( 素直になれたら ) entered the Oricon charts at number 6 and was legally downloaded up to 2.2 million times. Since 2007 she has released several albums, of which Request even went double platinum in Japan .

Her song Because of You was used as the theme song in the Japanese version of the film Passengers .

Juju currently resides in New York City.
