Jules-André Peugeot (born June 11, 1893 in Étupes , Doubs department , † August 2, 1914 in Joncherey , Territoire de Belfort ) was the first French soldier to be killed in the First World War .

Life

Peugeot did his military service in the French army since the spring of 1914 and was of the rank of Caporal .

The German Empire mobilized its troops on August 1, 1914; France responded by mobilizing its troops on August 2nd. Peugeot led a group of the 6th company of the 2nd battalion of 44 e régiment d'infantry from Lons-le-Saunier with the task to monitor the border between France and Germany in the face of growing tension. The group met a German patrol of the Jäger Regiment on Horseback No. 5 from Mulhouse in Alsace under the leadership of Lieutenant Albert Mayerwho had crossed the border into France when they were embroiled in a brief gun battle at Joncherey. Peugeot and Mayer were fatally wounded in the course of this battle. Peugeot died at 10:07 a.m., making it the first French to be killed in a war that was officially declared on August 3rd. The last French fallen in World War I was Augustin Trébuchon .

Today a monument in Joncherey commemorates Jules-André Peugeot.
