biography

Jules Tardieu was one of the three children of Jean-Charles Tardieu . The younger brother Amand-Louis Tardieu is also known. Jules Tardieu started school at the age of 8 and also attended grammar school in Rouen. At the age of 17 he left school and followed his father to Paris. There he began training as a bookseller with Antoine-Augustin Renouard .

He spent his free time in his father's studio. Among other things, he tried his hand at stitches after Vernet and Forbin . This activity trained him to be able to judge the quality of engravings, which he found very useful in the book trade.

In 1830 his father died. Then the July Revolution caused his family to leave Paris for some time. In 1835, after a long wait demanded by his family, he married in Saint-Germain, a rural community.

The son of his employer, Jules Renouard, was known for Tardieu's extraordinary understanding of art. He therefore brought him back to Paris in 1837. Tardieu was to take over the editing of an art-historical illustrated book. In addition to this activity, he began to write his first own stories and novels, still inspired by his stay in the country.

He founded his own bookstore in 1856 and became, as is common practice, a publisher himself. It was through him that the name Tardieu, which has long stood for skilled copperplate engravings, became a synonym for literary art and poetry.

Georges Charpentier edited Tardieu's publications as an anthology after his death.
