Jules Fontanez (born May 2, 1875 in Geneva ; † November 28, 1918 there ) was a Swiss painter , caricaturist and illustrator .

Life

His father Leon died when Jules Fontanez was four years old. His widowed mother, Joséphine Mollard, married the watchmaker Louis Frédéric Zurlinden.

At the age of fifteen Fontanez learned woodcut art at a craft school. His classmates were Henry-Claudius Forestier and Édouard Vallet . He worked as a cartoonist for various newspapers. In 1898 he went to Paris and became a student of Antonio de la Gandara , a former student of Jean-Léon Gérôme .

He made several trips to Great Britain , where he painted melancholy landscapes. He illustrated the stories of Alphonse Allais and Alfred Capus . He also provided drawings to the Courrier français , the satirical magazine of the turn of the 1900s in Paris. The characters of the Commedia dell'arte appeared in his works : Pierrot , Pierrette, Harlequin and Pulcinella .

Fontanez was active as a cartoonist and illustrator in many newspapers. Fontanez was friends with decadent writers such as Jean Lorrain and Robert de Montesquiou .

He exhibited his works in 1903 at the art exhibition of the Société nationale des beaux-arts .

From 1907 Fontanez worked in the humorous newspaper Le Rire . Fontanez was also an employee of the Delagrave publishing company. He illustrated Jules Chancel's children's books. In 1909, Daniel Baud-Bovy suggested to Jules Fontanez that he and other Swiss artists illustrate his book Künstlerferien (Vacances d'artistes).

In August 1914, after the outbreak of World War I , Fontanez returned to Geneva. He designed the decorations for the centenary of Geneva's entry into the Swiss Confederation (1814–1914). Soon after, Fontanez fell ill. Blind and paralyzed, cared for by his mother, he spent the last years of his life in a wheelchair. Jules Fontanez died at the age of 43.
