Julia Donaldson

Julia Donaldson , CBE (born September 16, 1948 in Hampstead , London ) is a British author who is counted among the most successful children's book authors, mainly because of her Gruffalo figure. She was named Children's Laureate 2011-2013.

Life

Donaldson studied literature and French at the University of Bristol and has worked as an editor, journalist and teacher. Today she lives as a freelance writer in Glasgow, Scotland .

Donaldson began her career writing songs for children's television. The text of their song A Squash And A Squeeze happened to come into the hands of the illustrator Axel Scheffler , who was so convinced of the text that he quickly illustrated it himself. The finished book was published in 1993. Since then she has written numerous children's books, including the bestseller The Gruffalo , which was also illustrated by Axel Scheffler. For the book The Gruffalo she received three important English book prizes ( Smarties Prize , the Blue Peter Award and the Experian Big Three Award ). The Gruffalo has appeared in over 30 languages, including a. also in German under the title Der Grüffelo . As a sequel appeared The Gruffalo`s child u. a. also translated into German as Das Grüffelokind

In the UK, Donaldson is the fourth-highest-selling author of all time, after JK Rowling , Jamie Oliver and James Patterson . In 2013 and 2014 she was named the most-read author of the year there.

Reading tours in Germany

Julia Donaldson comes to Germany regularly for reading trips, usually accompanied by Axel Scheffler. Most recently the two performed their play "The Gruffalo Show" in September 2011 in Berlin at the International Literature Festival Berlin and in Hamburg at the Harbourfront Literature Festival.
