Julia Sebutinde (born  February 28, 1954 in Entebbe ) is a Ugandan lawyer . She served as a judge at the Special Court for Sierra Leone from 2005 to 2011 and during this time she led the case against the former Liberian President Charles Taylor . She has been a judge at the International Court of Justice since February 2012 .

Life

Julia Sebutinde was born in Entebbe in 1954 and studied law at Makerere University , which she obtained in 1977 with an LL.B. completed. In 1990 she also received an LL.M. degree from the University of Edinburgh . From 1978 to 1991 she worked for the Ministry of Justice in her home country as a public prosecutor and as legal advisor to the Ugandan parliament . After Namibia's independence , she acted as an advisory expert for the Namibian government from 1991 to 1996 on behalf of the Secretariat of the Commonwealth of Nations .

Between 1999 and 2002, she was a member of three investigative commissions in Uganda to investigate allegations of corruption and financial irregularities in the Ugandan tax authorities as well as the country's police and armed forces. From 1996 she served as a judge at the High Court of Uganda , the third highest court in the country's legal system. In addition, from 2005 to 2011 she was a judge at the Special Court for Sierra Leone , where she headed the second chamber of proceedings in 2007/2008 and 2010/2011 and thus, among other things, the trial against Charles Taylor , the former President of Liberia .

Her nine-year term began in February 2012.

Julia Sebutinde is married and has two daughters.

Awards

Julia Sebutinde received an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh in 2009 .
