Abdul Gadrie Koroma

Abdul Gadrie Koroma (born  September 29, 1943 in Freetown ) is a lawyer from Sierra Leone . He worked as an ambassador for his home country in various countries and at the United Nations (UN) and was a member of the UN International Law Commission from 1982 to 1994 . From 1994 to 2012 he was a judge on the International Court of Justice .

Life

Abdul Koroma was in 1943 in Freetown and studied law at the University of Kiev and international law at King's College of the University of London . He entered the civil service in his home country in 1964 and worked for the Foreign Ministry of Sierra Leone from 1969 , inter alia as legal advisor to the country's permanent mission to the United Nations (UN) and later as plenipotentiary ambassador to the UN. At the same time, he was accredited as High Commissioner of Sierra Leone in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago and as Ambassador to South Korea and Cuba . Other diplomatic positions included activities as Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Belgium , France , Luxembourg and the Netherlands as well as to the European Communities , the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) and the Organization for African Unity with accreditation for Ethiopia , Kenya , Tanzania and Zambia .

At the United Nations, he was a delegate at various international conferences and worked in a number of UN bodies, such as the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space . From 1982 to 1994 he was a member of the International Law Commission , including 1991 as its chairman. He was also President of the African Society for International Law and Comparative Jurisprudence, Advisor to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and from 1999 to 2006 President of the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue in Geneva. His activities in the area of ​​international law included the responsibility of states under international law , the right to self-determination and other aspects of human rights , international humanitarian law and international criminal law, as well as the peaceful settlement of international conflicts.

From 1994 to 2012, Abdul Koroma was a judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague . Since March 2013 he has served as a judge at the World Bank's Administrative Court . In 2016 Koroma was appointed representative of East Timor in the Arbitration Commission (based on the Convention on the Law of the Sea ) to resolve the border disputes between Australia and East Timor .

Awards

Abdul Koroma received an honorary doctorate from the University of Sierra Leone and an honorary professorship from Gujarat National Law University in India . He is also an Honorary Bencher (appointed senior member) of the Lincoln's Inn Bar Association , a member of the Institut de Droit international and a Grand Officer of the Order of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
