Juliano Moreira (born January 6, 1872 in Salvador , died May 2, 1933 in Petrópolis ) was a Brazilian psychiatrist who is often regarded as the founder of the psychiatric discipline in Brazil. He was the first Brazilian university professor to take up psychoanalytic theory and integrate it into medical training.

The Afro-Brazilian Juliano Moreira was born on January 6, 1872 in Salvador, the capital of the then province of Bahia . He studied at the Medical Faculty of Bahia ( Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia ), today the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) (German: Federal University of Bahia) in Salvador da Bahia. In 1896 he became a professor of psychiatry at his alma mater. He worked on questions of intercultural psychiatry and neurolues . In Brazil he was the first to use a lumbar puncture . For many years he was director (1903–1930) of the national psychiatric clinic for the insane, the Hospício Pedro II ( Hospício Nacional de Alienados ) in Rio de Janeiro . The psychiatric Colônia Juliano Moreira near Rio de Janeiro was named after him. From 1926 to 1929 he was President of the Academia Brasileira de Ciências (Brazilian Academy of Sciences). He fought against scientific racism , humanized treatment methods for people with mental health problems and formulated proposals for new models of psychiatric care (1903). Moreira was acquainted with the German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin (1856–1926) and was in correspondence with him. He died on May 2, 1933 in Petrópolis .
