Julie Hawkes (* before 1960 as Julie Lamb ) is a former New Zealand squash player who also played internationally for Hong Kong for many years .

Career

Julie Hawkes attended Matamata College in her youth and then moved to the University of Otago . There she completed a degree in physical education and also began playing squash during this time. Until then she had been active in tennis and was among the top ten juniors in New Zealand. In squash she reached second place in the national ranking and traveled with the national team to South Africa, among other places . In 1975 she was New Zealand runner- up behind Pam Buckingham . She began working as a teacher in Wellington , where she met her future husband Richard Hawkes , a Davis Cup player from New Zealand. The couple moved to Hong Kong , where her husband started a job as a lawyer . Her first daughter was born at the very beginning of her stay in Hong Kong, which lasted 23 years. The couple have two other daughters, including Jaclyn , who also played squash, and a son.

In Hong Kong, Hawkes continued to play squash and won several national championships . From 1979 she won the title three times in a row, further titles followed in 1986 and 1988. In 1986 she was Asian champion after a final victory against Teresa Brooke . In the same year she won the Asian title with the team and took part in the World Cup with her in 1985 and 1990 . After her career as a player, she was also active as a trainer in squash. In 2007 she was named Trainer of the Year by the New Zealand Squash Federation . In 2001, shortly after moving back from New Zealand, more precisely to Auckland , her husband Richard passed away.
