Julie Schmitt

Julie Schmitt (* 6. April 1913 in Cham ; for Marriage Julie Knabel; † 10. December 2002 in Munich ) was a German gymnast and Olympic champion.

At the Olympic Games in 1936 an Olympic team competition for gymnasts took place for the second time after 1928. With the German team consisting of Gertrud Meyer , Erna Bürger , Käte Sohnemann , Isolde Frölian , Anita Bärwirth , Paula Pöhlsen as well as Friedl Iby and Julie Schmitt, she won the gold medal three points ahead of the team from Czechoslovakia.

Since March 9, 1936, Julie Schmitt was married to Hugo Knabel (* October 30, 1909, † September 30, 1982). The marriage resulted in 4 children (Gerhard * January 6, 1937; Gertrud * December 16, 1937; Walter * September 21, 1942; Ilse * November 24, 1944).

Julie Schmitt retired into private life after her Olympic success, but remained loyal to sporting activities in many ways. She played successfully at the Tennis Club Pasing, competed in ski races and climbed mountains up to over 5000 meters (including Kilimanjaro ) in various regions of the world. Her enthusiasm for mountaineering stayed with her into old age.
