Julius Fürst (born May 12, 1805 in Zerkow near Posen ; died February 9, 1873 in Leipzig ) was a German orientalist .

Life

Fürst studied in Berlin (with Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel ), Breslau and Halle (with Wilhelm Gesenius ). He became a recognized scholar of Semitic languages as well as a representative of the Haskala . His research field essentially comprised Semitic linguistics and literature as well as the history of the Middle East . For Leopold Zunz 's Bible edition , he translated the books Daniel and Esra in 1838 . From 1840 to 1851 he published the Jewish-Enlightenment weekly magazine Der Orient . In 1848 he was a member of the pre-parliament .

Confusion with Joseph Fürst

In the literature on Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann , Julius Fürst is usually confused with the Berlin writer Joseph Fürst , since he only wrote his letters to both composers with “J. Prince ”signed. The misspelling was corrected in 2015 by comparing handwriting. Apparently Julius Fürst had no contact with Mendelssohn and Schumann.
