education

Julius Alfred Klostermann grew up with his older brother Heinrich and younger brother Rudolf in Wengern, which is now a district of Wetter (Ruhr). In 1845 he began his commercial apprenticeship at the Aders bank in Elberfeld . Klostermann stayed there for a few years after his training.

The activity as a businessman

In July 1851 Klostermann moved to Messina, which belonged to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies . There he entered the business of consul Wilhelm Jaeger, whose wife was a born Aders. In Messina, Julius Klostermann married Emilie Gonzenbach in 1855 (* September 26, 1834 in Messina, † March 12, 1864 in Messina). They had four children together: Emilie (* March 9, 1857 in Messina, † July 5, 1881 in Verna), Helene Luise (* July 29, 1858 in Messina, † May 27, 1935 in Putbus), Anna (* March 25, 1860 in Messina, † 24.6.1864 in Messina) and Alfred (* 28.11.1861 in Messina, † 24.11.1863 in Messina).

In 1862 Klostermann left the business of Consul Jaeger and, together with his father-in-law, founded the export and manufacturing business Gonzenbach-Klostermann & Co. 12 years later, the export business was closed after Klostermann received the offer from Julius Jaeger - a son of Wilhelm Jaeger had to become a partner in the W. Jaeger business.

The activity as consul general

In 1856 Julius Klostermann became Vice-Consul of the Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway in Messina. 9 years later he was then by the Swedish King Charles XV. appointed consul general of Sweden and Norway throughout Sicily. The couple had five children: Eckard (* 5.9.1870 in Messina, † 18.09.1958 in Düsseldorf), Elisabeth (* 1.1.1872 in Messina) married Müllensiefen , Julius (* 26.2.1874 in Messina), Irmgard (* 13.12. 1880 in Messina) and Werner (* 4.1.1886 in Berlin).

During his time as Vice-Consul and later as Consul General of Sweden and Norway, the Klostermann house regularly became a meeting place for scientists and naturalists, including the zoologists Ernst Haeckel , Ludwig Graff de Pancsova and Anton Dohrn . Ernst Haeckel wrote in a letter to his bride: "But the young Klostermanns are very excellent and extremely amiable young people". Ludwig Graff de Pancsova even named the vortex worms he discovered after Julius Klostermann, the Turbella Klostermanni, as thanks for the hospitality . For his services as Swedish-Norwegian consul general, Klostermann was awarded the Gustav Wasa Order in the 1970s and the Order of Saint Olav in 1882 .
