Helene Luise Klostermann (born July 29, 1858 in Messina ; † May 27, 1935 in Putbus ) was a German educator who was primarily committed to kindergarten and the dissemination of Friedrich Froebel's pedagogy .

She was the second of four children of the businessman Julius Klostermann and his wife Emilie, geb. from Gonzenbach. Her childhood was very happy in the midst of a happy circle of siblings, looked after and cared for by parents she loves and adores - in the large city apartment, whose thick walls give coolness in summer and warmth in winter, and felt and remembered even more vividly, in the country house outside, that the family takes in spring and autumn . After the early death of the mother, the father remarried. The marriage had three more children. She had an intimate relationship with the stepmother and half-siblings all her life. From 1872 to 1874, Helene Klostermann attended her aunt's private secondary school, which she founded and ran in Bonn . After returning to her parents' home, she led the life of a senior daughter and continued her education, especially in the field of music. In spring 1878 she returned to Bonn again to train as a teacher at her aunt's training center. Helene Klostermann taught at the Bonn school for a short time, followed by her younger siblings. After her family moved to Berlin , she broke away from her parents' home and took on tasks as a teacher in Ireland , England and Brazil . Helene Klostermann worked as a secretary in Naples for four years . There she met Adele von Portugall , who inspired her for Froebel pedagogy and kindergarten.

In 1898 Helene Klostermann went to Bonn and took over the management of her aunt's educational facility. She soon added a kindergarten and two elementary classes , as well as a kindergarten teachers' seminar. In 1922 she handed over the management of the institution to one of her students and retired to her house on the island of Rügen . Until her death, she was interested in archiving Friedrich Froebel's estate in the Froebel house in Bad Blankenburg .

Helene Klostermann was an eager Froebel disciple who also got involved in the heated Montessori Froebel discussion in the 1920s . In this regard, she rejected the proposed Montessori-Froebel synthesis, "because the prerequisite for play care in Montessori is not given".

The pedagogue gave innumerable presentations about Froebel and wrote several papers about him and his idea of ​​the kindergarten. In 1926 she stated about the important pedagogue:

“What the present is groping for in education and instruction, she is amazed to see it exemplified by Froebel when she penetrates his writings. What she longs for in terms of unification from unbearable isolation, in terms of a solution from agonizing tensions, Froebel anticipated it, as it were, and pointed out the path that only leads to life because it is the path of experience. "

Helene Klostermann had been a member of the board of the German Froebel Association since 1907 , of which she was chairman from 1918 to 1923 and then honorary chairman.
